Simple Safety Checks

In order to stay in your home as long as possible, safety is of the utmost importance.  In fact, 40% of those over the age of 75 fall each year, leading to the #1 reason for having to enter into a long-term care facility.  Even simple things, like a slippery rug or a sleeping pet could spell disaster for seniors.  Here are a few tips to consider when you do a thorough safety survey of your home:

  • Avoiding Falls: Put night-light in bedrooms, bathrooms, hallways, and other areas.Tack down or apply adhesive materials to the backs of rugs. Take up the area rugs or scatter rugs or scatter rugs so that you don’t trip or fall. Use wall-to wall carpeting for greatest safety. Place a cane in every room, so that if you fall and can’t get up, you can scoot on your bottom to the cane for help illness. The ties of responsibility and caring can be severed by hospitalization.

  • Medications: Check all medicines and ask the doctor or pharmacist about possible conflicts or contraindication. List all medicines, dosages, and schedules for taking the medicines. Get rid of all out dated medicines.

  • Kitchen:  If a person in the house is forgetful, remove all controls from the stove and electrical appliance when they are not in use. Install a microwave to simplify meal preparation. Put frequently used items within easy reach. Simple and easy to follow instruction to heat food taped to microwave.
